Maca for Fat Loss or Weight Gain?

weight loss Maca root is allotted a special place in ancient Incan history. The plant is used in natural remedies and was known to hold special properties believed to augment energy and stamina.

These are the specific properties of the root that make it a good supplement for a weight loss program. Maca works in a variety of ways to help with weight loss.

How Does Maca Help With Fat Loss?

Maca benefits dieters first by providing essential nutrients – carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals, that generally become deficient in individuals who have been on a diet for a while.

Vitamins such as B12, B2, and B6 are necessary for synthesizing a variety of enzymes needed in metabolic reactions supporting speed of metabolism.

When your metabolism is high, it promotes healthy weight loss.

Maca Gives the Body What it Needs to Improve Endurance, Stamina and Power

The ancient Incan warriors devoured maca before going into battle.

It gave them the extra power and stamina they needed to overcome their enemies. This is a well documented fact (1).

The carbohydrate content of maca breaks down to glycogen – the sugar needed by the muscles for high intensity exercise, or in the warriors case – hand to hand combat!

Additionally, maca contains easy to digest proteins, small quantities of essential fats and minerals, all of which are needed for better performance and radically reducing recovery time.

When you have more energy, you are able to exercise more intensely and for longer, which means you burn more calories and lose fat.

A More Efficient Thyroid Burns More Calories

Use of maca helps the thyroid gland to function at optimal capacity.

People on hypothyroidism medications have to cut down on their doses when taking mace, because it improves the function of thyroid to the point where less medication is actually needed.

In one study it was found that the thyroid hormone, T4, increased significantly with the use of maca.

A better functioning thyroid increases the average body temperature thus enhancing the body’s metabolic processes and making it burn more calories (2).

It is common knowledge in the fitness world, that the higher your body temperature is when you exercise, the more calories you burn.

That’s not to say you need to work out wearing arctic clothing, but the warmer your body is, is more optimal for fat burning.

Daily use of maca will elevate body temperature on average, up to one degree, which makes its use for losing weight, quite unique.

Maca Helps to Reduce Bad Cholesterol

High cholesterol is one element of obesity, even being slightly overweight.

If you have high cholesterol, you risk gaining weight quickly, and also risk developing heart disease and high blood pressure.

This additional strain on the heart will eventually lead to a shorter life, but maca can help.

The sterols found in maca aid in reducing bad cholesterol and improving good cholesterol.

This is an essential component in any weight loss program.

Maca also maintains blood sugar levels, which we discussed in the diabetes article on this site, in the safe zone by improving glucose tolerance, which eliminates unwanted deposit of fats.

The polypeptides, zinc, calcium and magnesium, found in maca help to build muscle mass during exercise (when combined with other muscle building nutrients).

And when your body holds more muscle mass, it burns fat much, much quicker, which is something most people do not realize.

Reduce the Stress, You Reduce the Weight!

Stress is a huge problem in modern society.

The last way that maca can help you to lose weight, is because it helps to balance and regulate your happy and stress hormones.

It’s like we live in an incredibly fast world, where we miss important things like nutrition, through healthy diet, and we just go along ‘sucking’ in all the stresses on a daily basis.

But, stress causes binge eating, usually on very unhealthy foods, and it can cause alcohol consumption to go through the roof too (speaking from personal experience!).

This all happens without a single thought for the inevitable weight gain.

No matter if you are eating three healthy meals a day, if you are constantly binging on junk food and fast food, you are going to gain weight.

But, when you take maca, you get all the energy you need to thrive in a hectic lifestyle. Your stress levels get ploughed away, so you are able to focus more on those things which are important.

You are more likely to stay in control of your eating habits, reducing the chances of gaining unwanted fat.

Can Maca Help You Gain Healthy Weight?

When we say ‘healthy weight’, we mean lean muscle mass.

And the answer is yes, although indirectly. Let me explain.

If you’re a gym addict like me, or even someone who exercises regularly at home, or perhaps does a body weight workout to keep in shape, maca can help you during and after your workout.

A couple of teaspoons of maca (not too late in the day), before you workout will give you enough energy to burst through your workout.

You’ll have the best workout, because you’ll be more focused and have the stamina to make it to the end, every time.

With a protein rich diet, and other important nutrients, you will burn off the fat and add lean, toned muscle.

  1. People say it can make others fat and gain unhealthy weight, but how can i take maca without getting fat anywhere and still lose the weight? Does Sauna help?

    1. Do I just have to eat less and eat only in moderation as always to lose weight? because I also heard maca makes people have an increased appetite? Does the increased appetite make people gain weight?

      1. Just eat a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet … would be my recommendation. I don’t have anything in my research to suggest maca will increase your appetite.
